Retreat to the Bach

Our wee Bach is hidden in the bush, surrounded by lush Pungas, Mānuka, and birdsong.  We’re 2km from the coast although most days you can still hear the ocean crashing.  It’s the perfect place to escape in total privacy, whether you are looking for a private solo retreat, a pitstop after experiencing the Heaphy Track, or a distraction free romantic break in wonderful Karamea.

Access is via a short winding track through the bush from the private parking area 3 minutes away.  On arrival you’ll find everything you need for a comfortable stay in a truly off grid setting.  There is a very comfy bed, linens, towels, basic kitchen, solar powered lights and stereo, copper sink, writing desk, books, puzzles and rainy day games.  Outside there is a wee deck perfect to pull the outdoor beanbags out to, and a secluded compost wharepaku/loo.

Two minutes further down the path through the bush is our outdoor solar shower for your private use.  The Bathroom is near the edge of our private gardens, feel free to peek over the fence and say hi if you wish, otherwise we will leave you in peace.

From the parking place, the drive and all bush tracks eventually lead back to the Barn which is our home; if you need anything we’re not too far away.  We treat the paths, Bach, and outdoor bathroom as completely private during your stay so you can fully relax and do your thing.

So… how off grid are we talking?

The solar powered Bach is deliciously without TV or internet, we all know you get a better connection when you unplug, however there is good phone signal on the Terrace, and wifi available at our home in the case of an emergency.  Please note there is no fridge and limited 12v power.  We would like to encourage guests to embrace the idea of retreat during your stay and aim for a digital detox (when was the last time you had a few days without your phone?)... However, there is enough power in the Bach to charge small devices if you have to.  There is a 400L filtered rain water tank that supplies the Bach with cold filtered rain water, a 2 ring gas burner and log fire.

You can find more info in our FAQ's.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I bring my dog?

YES! We love furry friends and dogs love it here too.  Please let us know if you are bringing your pup and we will make sure there are dog bowls ready for you.  Please keep your dog with you and under control at all times - we have many Wekas and their young living in the bush that would like to stay intact and unterrorised.  Please bear in mind that the Bach is not enclosed by a dog-proof fenceline and we have free ranging chooks and ducks at the front of the property.

While the beaches, rivers and township are great places to take dogs, anywhere within Kahurangi National Park and the Ōpārara Basin are dog-free zones.  There are a couple of options for dog-sitting in the area; sometimes if we are home we might be able to look after your dog for a few hours, otherwise Linda from Karamea Dog Kennels offers dog sitting, daycare, and boarding services (short or long-term). She provides a caring service for dogs with activities like playing and swimming. To make a booking or contact her, you can call 022 089 1620

Can I extend my stay once I’m here?

Possibly, please let us know ASAP and we will try our best to accommodate you.

Can I get there on public transport?

The Karamea Express leaves Westport at 11am Mon-Sat.

We can arrange collection from Karamea by prior arrangement for koha, please let us know if you will need a ride.

We offer collection from Kōhaihai for $50, please get in touch to arrange.

Further transport options can be found here:

https://www.karameainfo.co.nz/scenic-flights-transport

What’s the power situation?

The Bach has a small 12V solar rig that powers the lights and stereo, and can charge small devices during the day.  There are 12V plugs (car cigarette plugs) around the cabin that take USB charging cables.  There is not enough power to charge laptops or keep the music pumping and stream movies all night long.  We would like to encourage guests to embrace the idea of retreat during your stay and aim for a digital detox (when was the last time you had a few days without your phone?), however there is enough power in the Bach to charge small devices if you need to.

Can I walk to Karamea township from Weathertop?

Yes - it’s about a 50 minute walk down the Zig Zag path, over the bridge into Market Cross Karamea.  Turn left at the end of the drive and follow the path through the forest.  Once you descend the Terrace and meet Karamea Highway turn left again, then cross over the Karamea River bridge and follow your nose.

How do I become a volunteer at Weathertop?

From time to time we welcome volunteers / WWOOFers for a mahi exchange by prior arrangement.  Please get in touch with us via email with details of your timeframe, skillset and a little bit about yourself: hello@weathertopkaramea.com

Do you do Gift Vouchers?

Yes, click here.

If you had a different gift in mind please get in touch and we’ll do our best to help you.

What’s included in the kitchen?

2 ring gas burner, kettle, log burner, saucepans, steamer, wok, frying pan, cooking utensils, bowls, plates, cups, mugs, cutlery, sharp knives, bottle opener, coffee plunger, tea towels, chopping board, a selection of teas, coffee, olive oil, salt.

Please note there is no fridge or hot running water in the Bach.

What’s the deal with the Wekas?

Wekas, AKA ‘Bushchooks’, are inquisitive characters of the Ngāhere who will brazenly steal all manner of things, including shoes, food, and especially leather.  Although only found in a few places around the motu now, we are blessed with a large population here in Karamea.  Wekas make great parents and are very entertaining to watch.  Please make sure you put the Weka doors up if you have the doors open in the Bach and are away from the entrance to avoid unwanted thievery and droppings!

Can I book the whole of Weathertop for a private function?

Possibly, please get in touch to discuss ideas and options.

Can I bring my kids?

Of course.  There is a sofa bed in the main room we can provide extra bedding for on request.  Small people must be supervised around the wee log burner/kitchen and outside at all times.

Can I pitch a tent for our kids?

There is a small grassy area in the garden of the Bach where a 3 man tent will fit.

Please get in touch if you are thinking of a large tent and we’ll see what we can do

Can you help me to arrange my self-led retreat?

We’d love to - start here

How accessible is the Bach?

The paths can be moisty after a lot of rain and are not suitable for wheelchairs or buggies.

There are two steps inside the bach, and two more up to the wharepaku outside.

What’s the bug situation?

This is the West Coast, we have Sandflies and mozzies here so it’s a good idea to bring repellent and cover up around twilight.  Thankfully Weathertop has a relatively small clan of resident biting insects compared to hotspots like Kōhaihai just up the road, so don’t forget to take protection with you if you venture out and about.  We recommend non-toxic products like Goodbye Sandfly - available in all local shops - which is kinder on your body and the environment.

In Summer expect the chorus of Cicada and nocturnal flying Huhu Beetles.  If you’re lucky you might encounter one of our resident stick insects.

Is there fuel available in Karamea?

Yes, there’s 24/7 fuel here.  The drive over the Bluff is 97Km without fuel stops so please make sure you have enough in your tank - next top up is available in Westport.  There is an electric vehicle charging station at the 4Square.

Can I bring my partner on retreat?

Our special price of $333 for a 3 night solo retreat is for individuals only.  If you would like to book a retreat with your partner please use the normal booking system above.

I would like to book a solo retreat for longer than 3 days, is there a special price?

Guests are welcome to book for over three days using the promo code SOLO.  Subsequent days will be charged at $140 per night unless there is another block of 3 days, which would then drop to $111 per night.  Please get in touch with your specific solo retreat requests and we will see what we can do for you: hello@weathertopkaramea.com

How safe is travelling in Karamea?

The West Coast is known for its down to earth friendly locals who have a close affinity to our unique natural environment. You will find Karamea stands out as a welcoming place with a multicultural community used to visitors. We have a very low crime rate here, strong community spirit, and pride ourselves in welcoming people from all walks of life.  Weathertop is a queer friendly space 🌈

What kind of shops are in Karamea?

Our small 4Square opens daily 8am-6pm and stocks most essentials, it is more expensive than a bigger supermarket so best to stock up before you arrive.

Karamea Information and Resource Centre has fuel, books and souvenirs.

The Space opposite the Bakery sells cards, gifts and a wide range of excellent locally crafted balms and tinctures; it’s also a nice place to rest on the couch and dip into a book.

The Dutch Oven Bakery serves up the best of European fayre, open 8am-3pm Wed-Sat.

Vinnie’s Cafe is open daily, has the best pies in NZ(!) and also displays art prints and pounamu carvings for sale.

The Walking Tree Gallery opens daily from 10-3pm and showcases some of our amazing local art and craft - there are cards, prints and harakeke weaving for sale.

Saturday Morning Markets run seasonally from 8am-12pm at the RSA opposite Vinnie’s, you can find local fruit and veg, bits n bobs and maybe some healing.

What’s the nightlife like?

Like most rural towns in Aotearoa, Karamea is not known for its banging night life, however locals can pull some sweet events out of the hat from time to time:  Our two pubs The Karamea Village Hotel and The Little Wanganui Hotel both offer the usual country pub vibes with friendly locals ready for a yarn, good kai and regular offers/specials - check their social media for what’s on.  Sometimes The Last Resort kitchen is open for evening meals.  If you’re lucky enough to be in town at the right time you might encounter The Whitebait Ball (end of Oct); The KaraWearable Arts Show (end of May); a pop-up gig and pizza night at the The Dutch Oven Bakery courtyard; or even get to put on a show at the infamous 107.5 Karamea FM Community Radio!  Local events can be found at Karamea.nz.  The good news is there are miles of untouched beaches here, perfect for a wee driftwood fire and a sundowner any evening.

Is there Kayak | SUP | Surf Board Hire in Karamea?

Officially, no, it’s best to bring your own.  Previous guests have been able to borrow some local gear but it is not always available.
